Working together to reduce casualties

Facts

Countywide, motorcyclists and moped riders have been identified as a being an issue because, in 2008, they represented 26% of people killed or seriously injured on Norfolk’s roads despite representing only 1% of traffic. This may be expected, though unacceptable, as riders of powered two wheelers have less protection and their safety is dependant on the road environment being more ‘forgiving’. The number of people killed or seriously injured in powered two wheeler crashes in Norfolk is falling at a very much lower rate than the overall killed or seriously injured figures. Nationally, powered two wheeler casualties are effectively static. This is generally considered to be due to a large increase in powered two wheeler use, particularly large bikes (500cc+).

Analysis of powered two wheeler crashes involving fatal or serious injury from 2006 to 2008 show that;

  • The number of riders of powered two wheelers killed or seriously injured were split fairly evenly between built up (40mph and less) areas and non built up areas (50mph and above) - 47% (169) built up, 53% (189) non built up
  • In built up areas, 40% of riders of powered two wheelers killed or seriously injured involved large machines (500cc and above)
  • In non built up areas, 65% of riders of powered two wheelers killed or seriously injured involved large machines
  • In built up areas, 27% of riders of powered two wheelers killed or seriously injured involved large machines (500cc and above)
  • In non built up areas, 56% of riders of powered two wheelers killed or seriously injured involved large machines

This is why riders of powered two wheelers are one of the three main groups of road users specifically targeted by the Think! Norfolk Partnership in 2010/2011.
