Working together to reduce casualties

SAM

SAM (Speed Awareness Message) is a mobile sign, activated by passing vehicles, to remind drivers and riders in Norfolk about the dangers of excessive and inappropriate speed.

SAM is an educational tool that can be deployed at various sites across the county upon request from parish or town councils and residents. The speed detection signs are set up to face a road and the speed limit is programmed in accordingly. If the speed of a vehicle is below the speed limit the device shows a 'smiley face' symbol and the actual speed that the vehicle is travelling. If a vehicle is detected as travelling above the speed limit, then the actual speed will be displayed on the sign as the vehicle passes. This data can then be used by the parish or town council, with liaison through their Safer Neighbourhood Team, to coordinate a plan of action if required.
