Facts
Young drivers (17-25 years) are disproportionately involved in crashes, due to a combination of newly acquired and therefore underdeveloped skills and a higher tendency towards risk-taking behaviour.
The number of KSI (killed or seriously injured) casualties resulting from drivers in this age group has fallen by a larger percentage than overall KSI casualties. However, this still represents over 30% of Norfolk’s total KSI’s. This is why young drivers are one of the 3 main groups of road users targeted by Norfolk's Casualty Reduction Partnership in 2009/10.
In the 3 year period from 2003 to 2005, 40% of serious or fatal injuries in Norfolk arose from collisions involving young drivers and the trend was upwards. This has now fallen to 34% following intensive investment in this group, though this is still too high.
Analysis of contributory factors indicates inexperience, as shown by poor skills and hazard perception, as well as risk taking tendencies. This is supported by national research, such as that carried out at the Transport Research Laboratory.
